FOOD Share Asks Neighbors to Collect Groceries For Needy

Desperate times call for simple measures.

Faced with both the cooling of the economy and a drop in grocers' giveaways, a prominent charity is asking neighborhoods to tackle hunger in Ventura County by putting on their own drives.

"The most simple of things and the greatest of concepts is to tap your neighbor on the shoulder and say, ‘Can I help?'" said Bonnie Weigel, incoming chief executive officer of FOOD Share.

The regional food bank is seeking 250,000 pounds of groceries in its holiday drive, estimating it will need that much to feed needy families and individuals until spring.
