Hope for the Hungry
"There is not enough money left over for food after I pay all my bills, I need the Brown Bag." Lolita Lopez, a senior who receives a supplemental bag of groceries every week at her apartment in Oxnard, expressing her need and gratitude for the program.
"It would be a great loss to all the people who get a bag," she said, "if this program wasn't around."
When asked what she would do if the program didn't exist, her facial expression showed concern, "I don't know, I don't even want to think about that."
Lolita is just one of the 1,500 low income seniors that receive a supplemental bag of groceries and for many of those seniors, it is their only source of food.
There is something wrong when the choice is between bill and food, or food and perspecriptions, yet that is the reality and the struggle that many seniors in Ventura County and across the country are facing.
This program offers hope to hungry in providing for seniors and their most basic need and in doing so helping them to maintain a decent quality of life.
